Most times we are ready for the interview, in that we get our clothes, shoes, and well packaged credentials ready, but we are often not prepared.
In the parable of the ten (10) virgins, Matthew 25:1-12, all were ready to meet the bridegroom but just five (5) were prepared and were regarded as being 'wise'. The 'wise' virgins took an extra effort in getting extra oil for their lamps while awaiting the coming of the bridegroom. When the bridegroom eventually came, they were fully prepared to meet him.
On the other hand, the 'foolish' ones missed their appointment with the bridegroom in the cause of searching for oil to keep their lamps burning.
Relating this to life issues, we are often ready with our credentials and making sure we have a good appearance but we do not take into cognizance extra efforts in equipping ourselves to know how best to tackle technical questions being asked by interviewer(s) and therefore, we often miss our opportunity in securing a spot in the organization.
Adequate preparation for a job interview requires you familiarizing yourself with the work environment, arriving at the interview centre few minutes before commencement of the interview, knowing the right answers to certain questions asked by the interviewer(s) amongst others.
This post will assist in getting us acquainted to certain questions that are often asked in a typical job interview and how best to answer such questions.
INTRODUCING YOURSELF
1. "Tell me a little about yourself" - when responding to these, focus more on both your personal and professional values, always be honest but talk about your best traits especially those that relate to the position for which you're applying.
2. "Who are you?" - what this really insinuates is a quick/brief snapshot of yourself and why you're the best candidate for the position you're applying for.
3. "Would you describe yourself as goal driven?" - give a sincere answer to this, the one that best describes you.
QUESTIONS ABOUT COMPETENCY, STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS
4. "What is the toughest problem you've had to face, and how did you overcome it?" - try to make this a problem that faced your company and not just you or your particular work group. Give examples of skills and techniques you used to resolve the problem.
5. "Why are you the best person for this job?" - in answering this, be confident and enthusiastic. Emphasize several reasons why you should be hired and don't try to say you're the very best qualified person for the job, because you don't know the qualifications of other applicants.
6. "If you had enough money to retire right now, would you?" - since you need the work, and it is the type of work you prefer, it's advisable not to say yes if you don't mean it.
7. "Do you think you're over qualified for this position?" - regardless of your qualifications, state that you are very well qualified for the position.
8. "What is your greatest strength?" - this is an opportunity to highlight your best skills, focus on your top three e.g., leadership skills, ability to prioritize, organizational skills etc. Determine the best suitable skills for the position you're aspiring for.
QUESTIONS REGARDING YOUR STABILITY
9. "What are you looking for in a job?" - before you apply for a job, you should desire for satisfaction, fulfillment and joy
10. "What is more important to you, the money or the job?" - note that, money is important but the job is the most important.
